Actually it’s not fair to compare Brandon Routh and Tom Welling for their acting in a superman story. Because they were playing a different role or character. Like Tom Welling plays the teenage version of the character in Smallville while Brandon Routh plays Superman/Metropolis Clark Kent in Superman Return.
It’s hard to compare them, because Brandon Routh really didn’t play “Clark”, except for a little scene on the farm and metropolis.
Tom Welling does a good job playing a young Superman. I really enjoy him on Smallville. He’s fine as a young Clark Kent, but I think he doesn’t have a confidence about him that Christopher Reeve/Brandon Routh have, as Superman.
I personally love Superman Returns because of Brandon Routh in there. He’s acting was good, but the script is not good enough to show his best performance. I hope I can see him for the next superman movie shot.

Yes I think Brandon Routh was an wonderful Superman and I also really liked his take on the Clark role. I wish WB would give us another Superman movie with Brandon Routh in the role. I can see no one else in the part.

I think Tom would be better than Brandon playing superman on next movie.
It’s not that Bradon is bad, cause he isn’t, but because I already see Tom as the man of steel, I guess. And it’d be very nice seeing him with all superman abilities, clothes and all his stuffs…

Tom Welling IS Superman
Okay, now see, here’s the thing… Welling and Routh are playing two different roles. Or three different roles, depending on how you look at it. Routh was playing both sides of the Clark Kent/Superman dual identity. And he did pretty good at it. There wasn’t the same stark difference that you saw when Christopher Reeve played the roles, but still a good job.
Welling, on the other hand, is playing something different. I’ve always thought that with Superman, there are always three roles. There’s the extremely shy Clark Kent personality that’s presented to the world. There’s the noble, take charge Superman personality that’s presented to the world. And then there’s the real Clark Kent, that only some people get to see. Welling is playing that third role, mostly because at the stage of his life Clark is in in “Smallville”, he hasn’t fully developed those other two yet. However, it is my opinion that you see enough flashes of those personalities to conclude that Welling could do an excellent job at them. Especially if he was playing a novice Superman… as he would be doing if “Smallville” extends itself into a television or movie franchise with Welling actually portraying Superman.
That being said, I would prefer Tom Welling as Clark Kent/Superman.

Hello everyone! Of course everyone has their own opinion. It is always wonderful when comics are brought to life on the little or big screen. I must say however, the recent Superman movie would have been much better if our very own Tom Welling was the lead. He is a fantastic performer. He exudes charisma and confidence, as you can see from watching him or listening to his fellow cast mates! It has been very enjoyable watching his character grow. He will make an outstanding Superman. The show is fantastic, even after all this time. Here’s to hoping it will last as long as the Simpsons!

Ya. I cant figure out why Superman Returns wasnt a spin off of Smallville.
I would have waited on the Superman movie and let Smallville play then extend it as Metropolis or Superman or whatever on the big screen.
Had they done this right Superman being on the big screen again would have
been special to a lot of people who have invested years into the show and
Tom Welling has that Christopher Reeve quality that Routh doesnt have.
Hollywood is a town where bad decisions seem to be the business as usual.
In fact, Ill go so far to say that Superman Returns didnt fare as well because Routh paled in comparison to that ‘Superman’ quality that Reeve had and Welling has.
Anyway, theyll make another Superman with Routh and itll probably flop too
and Smallville will be remembered with the fondness that so many remember the original Superman with.
